EADS and MT Aerospace sign an initial agreement to coordinate the licensing of their infusion technologies for composites production

An initial agreement on a mutual license grant was signed this week by the EADS Technology...

This is the first step toward a cross-licensing arrangement involving the EADS-patented Vacuum Assisted Process (VAP®) and MT Aerospace’s MT RIMTEC® – both of which enable composites manufacturing without the use of traditional large, expensive autoclaves, marking a major step forward in production technology.
The initial agreement, concluded at the JEC Composites show in Paris, was signed by Wulf Hoeflich, EADS’ Head of Technology Licensing; Martin Salzburger, Head of Patents & Technology Licensing at EADS’ Cassidian business unit; and Dr. Oliver Kunz, the Head of Aeronautics, Composites and Ceramics at MT Aerospace.
Under the accord’s terms, MT Aerospace would be granted a non-exclusive license to utilize VAP® patents in the manufacture and sale of its products, while EADS is to be provided an exclusive license for products manufactured on the basis of MT RIMTEC® patents.
“This will be a win-win opportunity for both EADS and MT Aerospace, allowing each to benefit from the other company’s proven composites production technologies,” Hoeflich said.
Both the VAP® and MT RIMTEC® technologies use manufacturing processes that start with a dry fiber layup, followed by the infusion of resin using a two-chamber setup separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane laminate holds the resin in shape and has micropores through which gaseous molecules are able to escape.
The advantages of these complementary technologies include easier and quicker ply layup processes, along with the ability to use thicker material in layups for higher productivity. Their application is well tailored for large and complex-shaped parts, and they eliminate the need for climate control on the shop floor while providing much better environmental conditions in the factory.
“Making use of both technologies enlarges the scope of resin infusion processes for products of excellent quality and performance – which in the end means high-value solutions for our customers,” said Dr. Ulrich Clormann, Head of Technology and Innovation at MT Aerospace.
The VAP® technology has been licensed to a steadily growing community of users in both aerospace and non-aerospace applications. For aerospace use, the VAP® licensing authority is EADS, while licenses for non-aerospace applications are released by EADS’ partner company, Trans-Textil.

MT Aerospace contributes to third successful ATV mission

Key components for launcher and payload again manufactured in Augsburg

Good news from Kourou: this morning at 5.34 a.m. CET, an Ariane 5 successfully sent the third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) on its way to the International Space Station. By providing key components for both launcher and payload, MT Aerospace was once again mainly involved in the mission.
The construction of the European launcher Ariane 5 and automatic cargo ferry ATV is under the industrial prime contractor ship of Astrium and MT Aerospace is a leading supplier for both projects. The Augsburg/Germany based aerospace company is even Germany’s largest supplier of the Ariane 5 programme, delivering for example booster cases or large tank domes for the launcher’s main and upper stages. Furthermore, MT Aerospace is an important partner in the ATV programme: as for the first two missions in 2008 and 2011, main elements of the third ATV, like propellant tanks, gas and water tanks or major parts of the load-carrying structure, were manufactured in Augsburg and then delivered to Astrium.
OHB System, a sister company of MT Aerospace, also plays a crucial part in the integration of this ATV. The entire harness system and the meteoroid protection shield for the space freighter were produced at OHB’s facilities in Bremen.
MT Aerospace and OHB System, thus, again contributed substantially to the success of major European space programmes.
In almost one week, the Automated Transfer Vehicle named ”Edoardo Amaldi“ will dock automatically with the ISS, supplying the crew with water, fuel, food and clothes. Moreover, the ATV is the only vehicle which is able to lift the ISS to a higher orbit performing so-called “reboost”-maneuvers – a crucial prerequisite to keep the space station in operation. “Edoardo Amaldi” will stay docked for six months, at the end of its mission it takes waste on board and burns up into the Earth's atmosphere.
Until 2015, two more ATV missions are planned – both with involvement of MT Aerospace and OHB System.

MT Aerospace to manufacture flight hardware for IXV reentry vehicle

Contract signed with Thales Alenia Space Italia

MT Aerospace received an important follow-up order to manufacture ceramic compound body flaps and heat shield components for the European IXV reentry vehicle: after completion of the development phase and successful Critical Design Review, Thales Alenia Space Italia, as prime contractor, and the Augsburg/Germany based company signed a contract for the qualification and manufacture of the IXV vehicle’s flight hardware. IXV will be launched into space in 2014 to test reentry technologies for future space applications.
The lightweight ceramic body flaps, each with a length of 0.8 m and a weight of ca. 37 kg, as well as main components of the thermal protection system on the vehicle’s leeward side have been developed in Augsburg and are fabricated of patented, high-temperature resistant fiber-reinforced ceramic composites.
These high-performance composites ensure that the components will withstand extreme temperatures of up to 1,900°C and quasi-static loads of up to 5.7 g – a crucial prerequisite for the successful reentry of the IXV, during which the vehicle starts from an altitude of around 450 km and reaches a velocity of 7.5 km/s on entering earth atmosphere.
The highly complex components are going to be delivered by the second half of 2013. IXV will be launched into space on board of a Vega launcher and is intended to collect a large number of useful data at reentry. The aim is to gain valuable knowledge on reentry systems for future European space missions.

Shaping technologies for future aerospace applications – this vision of MT Aerospace is...

The Augsburg/Germany based aerospace supplier continuously extends its outstanding competencies in materials and manufacturing processes. MT Aerospace exhibits a three-dimensional dome segment of the Ariane 5 liquid hydrogen tank whose port flange was assembled using the friction stir welding method for the first time. Furthermore, the technology leader shows the latest successful developments in key programs as Ariane 5 ME, A400M and ALMA and demonstrates why MT Aerospace is an essential partner for the aerospace industry – today and tomorrow.
Enhancing technologies and manufacturing processes
The three-dimensional dome segment at the Paris Air show points out that MT Aerospace is taking new paths in the implementation of its leading-edge technologies. Friction stir welding replaces conventional fusion welding for the assembly of a port flange. Due to improved material properties of the weld, wall thickness of the segment can be reduced, resulting in reduced weight and costs. Furthermore, the innovative process is applicable to high-strength 2195 aluminum-lithium alloy for even higher performance.
In the field of large cryogenic tanks, MT Aerospace is setting new technology standards. In cooperation with NASA and Lockheed Martin Space, a tank dome with a diameter of 5.4 meters was manufactured for large cryogenic tanks. For the production, flat panels were joined to one plate by friction stir welding and then pressed into the final form using the spin-forming method. The large domes no longer have to be welded together from single segments in many individual steps, as a result significant weight and cost reductions could be achieved. Supported by the Bavarian government and in cooperation with Bavarian research facilities, MT Aerospace now promotes the industrialization of this technology – making future launch vehicles even more efficient and competitive.
Performance delivered
A cooperation agreement for the development of the new Upper Stage tank for Ariane 5 Midlife Evolution was signed with Astrium in May. MT Aerospace is responsible for development and production of the enlarged, lightweight propellant tank, making the new cryogenic upper stage more efficient. From 2017 on, the Ariane 5 ME will have up to 20% more payload capacity. The European Launch Vehicle Ariane 5 is developed and constructed under Astrium industrial leadership.
For the European military transport airplane A400M, MT Aerospace produces assemblies and sub systems for the air supply of all heat exchangers (air condition, inflators, hydraulics) as well as aerodynamic fairings made of composite materials. The development stage was successfully concluded including the delivery of five ship sets for the currently carried out test flights. At present the production of the first serial ship sets is ramping up.
For the antennas and mechatronics division, MT Aerospace can also report great success. In April, the first antenna for the worldwide largest radio telescope project ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) in the desert of Atacama in Chile was handed over to the customer. Overall, 25 ready to use telescopes will be delivered by the system provider for this giant project in 5000 m height. The handover of the second antenna is in preparation.

MT Aerospace AG provides key components to milestone mission

It was a model start as the 200th Ariane launcher sent the Automated Tansfer Vehicle ATV2 into orbit yesterday. The European supply spacecraft named “Johannes Kepler” is now on its way to the International Space Station, intended to deliver food, fuel and general supplies. With a total mass of more than 20 tons, this was the heaviest payload ever carried by an Ariane 5 launcher.
Aerospace supplier MT Aerospace of Augsburg, Germany, contributed key elements to the success of this mission: The technology company not only manufactured tanks and components for the Ariane launcher – approximately 10 percent of the launcher hardware – but also delivered essential components for the ATV.
As in the first ATV mission in 2008, important elements of the supply spacecraft were developed and manufactured in Augsburg, for example propellant tanks, gas and water tanks as well as major parts of the load-carrying structure. The ATV is the only vehicle being able to boost the space station into a higher orbit, which is a crucial pre-requisite to keep the ISS in operation.
„We are involved in this mission with a variety of innovative products” said Hans Steininger, CEO of the MT Aerospace AG. “Especially our propellant tanks for the Ariane 5 EPS upper stage and the ATV tanks are manufactured using the innovative spinforming method.”
The spinforming method patented by MT Aerospace allows the precise manufacture of light-weight tank shells in just one step. In the future, this technique is also to be used for the production of large propellant tanks.
