Augsburg, 23 June, 2021. MT Aerospace AG, a subsidiary of space and technology group OHB SE, has reached an important milestone in the targeted development of a CFRP upper stage for a future European launcher: at the beginning of June 2021, it had its prototype high-performance tank for rocket engines made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) tested at the DLR test centre in Trauen as part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ComET project within the Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP).
Augsburg, June 21, 2021. MT Aerospace AG, a subsidiary of the space and technology group OHB SE, was awarded a contract by ArianeGroup GmbH as part of the Future Launcher’s Preparatory Program of the European Space Agency (ESA) for the advanced technology development for a future black upper stage for the European launcher Ariane 6. The advantages of the smart material CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) are in demand for the commissioned development of the propellant tanks and structures
NASA and ESA plan to bring a piece of Mars back to Earth
Our neighboring planet Mars has been having repeated visits from Earth: Probes are orbiting Mars, rovers are being deployed there, we recently received a soundbite from Mars and, until recently, we eagerly anticipated the maiden flight of NASA's "Ingenuity" helicopter. The European Space Agency ESA and its U.S. counterpart NASA want to take robotic exploration of the Red Planet to a new level in the Mars Sample Return (MSR) program: the delivery of Mars soil samples to Earth in the 2030s. The Augsburg based MT Aerospace AG, which is part of the high-tech group OHB SE in Bremen, is making a major contribution to the program by supplying tank systems for the "Earth Return Orbiter" (ERO), the most prominent European component of this project.
ESA places 11-million-euro contract
The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded MT Aerospace AG, a member of the high-tech group OHB SE, a contract to set technical standards for additive manufacturing processes (3D printing) in the space sector. The contract is worth €11 million, has a term of 3 years and is aimed at qualifying 3D processes and large-volume components for space applications.

Start-up Rocket Factory Augsburg playing a leading role
Bremen, March 11, 2021 - Rocket Factory Augsburg AG, a subsidiary of space and high-tech group OHB SE, has been commissioned by the European Space Agency ESA to conduct a study on the future of the European space transportation sector. The microlauncher manufacturer is heading a consortium which also includes OHB companies MT Aerospace AG and OHB System AG. The objective of the study is to investigate New European Space Transportation Solutions (NESTS) for the period beyond 2030.
Reduced production of the Ariane 6: European launcher industry in distress MT Aerospace AG in Augsburg massively affected.
Staff and management demand clear political decisions
Augsburg, August 5, 2020. “The initial launch of Ariane 6 has been postponed. This means that series production will commence at a later date and on a smaller scale than planned. The fallout from the corona pandemic is additionally exacerbating the situation. We are in a difficult position,” states Hans Steininger, CEO of MT Aerospace AG. “Unless the governments of the European countries involved express their clear commitment to stabilizing the European launcher industries in the near future and arrange full funding of the Ariane 6 development project, MT Aerospace AG faces massive economic problems before the end of the year. There is a threat of further losses of jobs and the valuable expertise that has been built up over decades. If we fail to gain any solid perspective in the early autumn, we will be forced to make unpleasant business decisions.”
